Sumario:Metabolic syndrome is a combination of metabolic disorders, with an estimated prevalence of 20-25% worldwide. According to experimental, clinical and epidemiological evidence, it is associated with the main psychiatric disorders, alterations in the nervous system and neurodegenerative diseases. Obesity, which induces chronic inflammatory state, and insulin resistance appear to be the main underlying pathophysiological mechanisms leading to neuroinflammation, neural tissue damage, and cognitive impairment. These issues are discussed with simple proposals of therapeutic interventions: diet, physical activity, sleep improvement and medications with potential neuroprotective effects.
