| Sumario: | The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) was recognized as a pandemic on March 11, 2020, by the World Health Organization. Due to its recent appearance, we still do not know all the possible sequelae of the pandemic on the auditory and vestibular system, but a clear scenario has begun to emerge in the case of adult patients. This brief review will describe the most relevant effects of COVID-19 on the auditory and vestibular systems, their association with stress, anxiety and depression, and their impact on the nervous system and mental health of these patients. Analysis of the data reported so far suggests that about 8-10% of individuals infected with the COVID-19 virus will develop hearing loss, dizziness and/or vertigo at some point during the course of their illness, and an additional 15-20% will develop (or see an aggravation in previous symptoms of) tinnitus and its associated mental health disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and irritability. It is not ruled out, however, that more and new problems associated with COVID-19 will be described in the near future. |
