It has been suggested that some addictive properties of ethanol (EtOH) are modulated by 5-HT1B receptors in the nucleus accumbens (nAcc). This research was designed to assess the effects of systemic and intra-accumbal administration of the 5-HT1B receptor agonist CP94253 on the oral self-administration of EtOH in rats. Male Wistar rats were water deprived for 24 h, and then trained to lever-press for EtOH reinforcement on a FR3 schedule until response rate remained stable at 80%. After this training, a group of rats received an intraperitoneal injection of 5-HT1B receptor agonist CP94253 before rats were under FR3 schedule of reinforcement for EtOH access. Another group of rats, after similar training, received intra-accumbal injection of CP94253. The data showed that both systemic and intra-accumbal injections reduced oral self-administration of EtOH. These findings suggest that the 5-HT1B receptors activation may modulate the reduction of oral self-administration of EtOH in rats. |
