Sumario:The aim of this article is to characterize and analyze the state of the Latin American communication field in the period 2000-2018. To achieve this, we propose to work from various secondary sources that carry out balances or state of the art on the field itself, in order to produce a systematization and interpretive analysis of the most relevant aspects of the field: its thematic and methodological fragmentation and dispersion, its academic consolidation, the bureaucratization of subjects, knowledge and practices, the recovery of critical traditions and the identity crisis of Latin American thought. Therefore, it is interesting to continue deepening in a characterization of the current Latin American communication field, since we understand that describing and explaining this last stage becomes necessary for those who teach theories of communication in Latin America.
