This paper have two aims: 1) to characterize the general environmental evolution of the Barrancas river basin since the end of Pleistocene and to discuss its impact on the human groups that used it: and 2) to briefly describe the archaeological record recovered in the upper and mid-section of the Barrancas river, mainly the chronology and general characteristics of the archaeological sites under study and the relative chronology and placement of the currently documented rock art. Barrancas archaeological evidence conjoined with the paleoenvironmental data obtained in this basin shows that substantial changes in local habitats have had a relevant role in the way in what human groups used this spaces through time, allowing to characterize them alternatively as a nodal or inter-nodal area through Holocene. |

Desde 2012 nuestro equipo de investigación ha llevado adelante el “Proyecto Arqueológico Barrancas” que tiene como objetivo principal el estudio de la historia de los pueblos que habitaron esta localidad y las áreas vecinas durante los últimos 10.000 años y la puesta en valor del patrimonio cultural legado por estas sociedades. El presente trabajo tiene dos objetivos principales: 1) caracterizar la evolución ambiental de la cuenca del río Barrancas desde fines del Pleistoceno y discutir su impacto sobre los grupos humanos que la utilizaron a lo largo del tiempo; y 2) describir sucintamente el registro arqueológico de la cuenca superior y media del Río Barrancas, fundamentalmente en lo que hace a su cronología absoluta y a las características generales de los sitios arqueológicos bajo estudio, así como la cronología relativa y ubicación del arte rupestre relevado hasta el momento. La conjunción de la evidencia arqueológica de Barrancas con la información paleoambiental de la cuenca ilustra la manera en que cambios sustanciales en los hábitats locales tienen una incidencia relevante en el uso que los grupos darán a estos espacios a través del tiempo, permitiendo caracterizar el área de estudio como internodal o nodal de manera alternante a lo largo del Holoceno. Desde 2012 nossa equipe de pesquisa realiza o "Projeto Arqueológico Barrancas" cujo objetivo principal é estudar a história dos povos que habitaram esta cidade e áreas vizinhas durante os últimos 10.000 anos e a valorização do patrimônio cultural legado para essas sociedades. Este trabalho tem dois objetivos principais: 1) caracterizar a evolução ambiental da bacia do rio Barrancas desde o final do Pleistoceno e discutir seu impacto nos grupos humanos que a utilizaram temporalmente; y 2) descrever sucintamente o registo arqueológico da bacia superior e média do rio Barrancas, fundamentalmente em termos da sua cronologia absoluta e das características gerais dos sítios arqueológicos em estudo, bem como a cronologia relativa e localização da arte rupestre até à data pesquisada. A conjunção das evidências arqueológicas de Barrancas com as informações paleo ambientais da bacia ilustra o modo como as mudanças substanciais nos ‘habitats’ locais têm uma incidência relevante no uso que os grupos darão a esses espaços temporalmente, permitindo caracterizar a área de estudar como internodal ou nodal alternadamente ao longo do Holoceno.
